“Beauty is a savage garden.”

– Anne Rice, The Vampire Lestat

Last month we were excited to get an order from the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in preparation of the opening of their exhibit entitled, “CHOMP: They Came From the Swamp.” The exhibit features all kinds of carnivorous plants and is designed to give visitors a “bugs-eye view.” If you go, stop by the gift shop to see Marty’s collection of Savage Garden Jewelry.

The Conservatory’s website notes that CHOMP was set up in collaboration with California Carnivores, a Sebastopol based carnivorous plant nursery. Visiting the nursery makes a fun day trip for adults and kids alike.  World’s Rare Plants, in Half Moon Bay is yet another great place to experience carnivorous plants. Their greenhouse is surreal; stuffed to the “skylights” with incredible, bizarre, and awesome plants.  If you go, expect to bring some hungry plant-pets home!

What is it about carnivorous  plants that so fully captures our attention? Certainly the forms themselves are beautiful: sinuous curves, translucent cells, wicked fangs. There is a mystic surrounding these plants; the scientific discovery of the bizarre combined with imagined adventures to exotic and dangerous lands. Carnivorous plants are an unnerving morph of both animal and plant. Venus flytraps have jaws, pitcher plants have mouths, sundews have eyes.

Have carnivorous plants captured your imagination? We’d love to hear from you so chime in with your comments and check out our Savage Garden Jewelry Page!

In preparation for the revelry, we’ve hand-picked  a list of our favorite period terms. Pirates, being creative, saucy folk, have create a wide range of colorful expressions that compliment their rowdy lifestyle. We all know the basics from famous films like Pirates of the Caribbean, but a true pirate employs a much wider range of terms.

Check it out, and you’ll be speaking like a buccaneer in no time! Continue reading

Neptune Monograph – The original top secret plans for the Normandy D-Day Invasion

My father was mostly known as a famous geologist* but he was very proud of his service in World War II. As an officer during the war, he was trained as an oceanographic meteorologist in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was awarded the bronze star for his work in forecasting the surf conditions during the Normandy D-Day invasion. One of his prize possessions is his original copy of the top secret plans for the D-Day invasion known to historians as the Neptune Monograph.

The 72nd anniversary of the Normandy invasion is on June 6th, 2016.  In honor of my father, and all the veterans of World War II here is a gallery of photos of the Neptune Monograph.

My father passed away on May 13th, 2015, an hour after his 98th birthday. He lived a remarkable life and spent his last 25 years in Montecito, California near Santa Barbara.

Several years ago my father wrote a book about his wartime experiences called Surf Forecasting for Invasions during World War II available at martymagic.com/books

There is a Amazon Kindle version of Surf Forecasting for Invasions during World War II

There is a Kindle version of the Chapter 4 Forecasting Waves for the Normandy Invasion

*My father was former chairman of the geology department  at UCLA and UCSB, member U.S. National Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, Professor Emeritus UCSB, Penrose medal, Fulbright Award, Guggenheim Scholarship, etc.

New Species of Nautilus Discovered!

Swimming in from stage right  are three of Alisha’s new and fabulous, Fossilized Ammonite Nautilus Necklaces. The creation process for this design has been long and fraught with challenges but the end result has been worth the headache and stress.

Fossilized Ammonite Nautilus Necklace

Fossilized Ammonite Nautilus Necklace

It all started this past February at the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil show when Alisha spotted a tray of miniature fossilized ammonite shells at one of the many venues.  There are ammonites of all sizes and qualities at this mega show but the ones she spotted were subtly opalized and just the perfect size for what she had in mind. Each evening at dinner, after long days of walking and shopping, Alisha, John and I would pull out our treasures and discuss design possibilities. Alisha wanted to design a tiny nautilus emerging from a fossilized ammonite shell and we talked about how she might approach the project.  I believed it would be challenging even for me but I gave her encouragement and advice and the next day she returned to purchased the shells.

Fossilized Ammonite Shells

Fossilized Ammonite Shells

Ammonites are a widely prevalent fossil, possessing the typically ribbed spiral-form shell as pictured above. These creatures inhabited the oceans  between 240 – 65 million years ago and went extinct with the dinosaurs.  Ammonites were cephalopods. Today, the living relatives of the ammonite include the nautilus, octopus, squid and cuttlefish.

In March, Alisha began the wax carving for her Nautilus and spent many hours hunkered over the wax, perfecting her tentacles.

Nautilus Wax and Fossilized Ammonite

Nautilus Wax and Fossilized Ammonite

In April she sent her completed wax nautilus swimming off to the casters and thankfully the original arrived in one piece, (unlike her Poseidon’s Gift Ear Cuff wax that arrived broken into many pieces.) The next challenge was to mold it, adapt the individual waxes to their assigned shells, cast each, and figure out a way to securely attach the sterling silver nautilus to the ammonite. There were issues of balance and of how and where to attach a bail to the shell so that the nautilus would swim downward? As the Marty Magic business grows, so does our team and Dave, who helps us with ring sizings and repair was called into action. Dave, with his diamond drill bit and his patient competence drilled and pegged the ammonite shells where Alisha indicated.

Today is June 2nd and the first three of Alisha’s Nautilus Pendants are finally finished. This afternoon, Alisha proudly took the photos of her pieces and Laura edited and formatted the photos. I am writing this blog post and thus far, I have written all the copy for our web site and all of the blog posts. Beginning next week, Alex will start work and take over some of the content writing in hopes of freeing up time for me to create new designs. It takes a diverse and talented team for this magic to unfold.

Footnote: Sometimes simply naming a new design can be difficult and can make a difference.  There was a lot of laughter behind the scenes today.  Before I could post her Nautilus on martymagic.com, I asked Alisha what she wanted to name her new piece? Because there were many hurdles in brining the design to fruition, there were discouraging moments for Alisha. Alisha’s first suggestion was “Squiggly-Face, Nautilus Necklace – torturer from the deep.” Her second suggestion was “Mr. Squishy Snottilus Pendant.”  I vetoed both suggestions and for the time being, her marvelous new design will be elegantly referred to as the “Fossilized Ammonite Nautilus Necklace.”

I have no doubt that this new design, regardless of it’s name will be greatly coveted and a feather in Alisha’s crown.  I’m very proud of my daughter.

A Blast From the Past

I was recently looking through old photographs and came across this early photo of me at one of my first craft shows. I believe my mother took this photo at the Palos Verdes craft festival in the summer of 1976.

I was fortunate to be at the right place at the right time. In the summer of 1978, Scott and I put our lives in “storage” and drove from San Diego to San Francisco to try our luck selling my jewelry at a few San Francisco Street Festivals and at Silicon Valley Art and Wine Festivals. The Silicon Valley was bursting with creative energy and the people working in the valley had alternative tastes in jewelry. My designs were well received and  Scott and I traveled to many festivals, camping and couch surfing with friends and family.

Frequently, we were scraping bottom, with no money to get us to our next show.  I remember sitting at a “Denny’s” in the fall of 1978, with no gas in our tank and no prospects. Scott and I laid a few rings and necklaces on the formica table with a hope and a prayer that one of the waitresses would  be attracted and buy a piece to finance a tank of gas to our next art show. We sold two silver hand rings to two different waitresses; filled our gas tank and our bellies and were on the road again.

In 1988 Scott and I became ex’s but today we are best of friends.

In 1990 I married Art Bobroskie.  Art was at the pulse of the Silicon Valley computer industry and had worked at a number of start up companies as well as Apple and Microsoft. One evening in 1995, Art returned home and casually mentioned to me that he had purchased  me the domain name martymagic.com.  19 years ago, I did not have a clue of the significance of this or even what the internet was?

The past 36 years have been a wild and fun ride and I look forward to many more years of shows, assisted by the creative and youthful energy of my two grown children,  Alisha and John.

Thank you all for the encouragement and the continued support throughout the years that has enabled me to make my way as an independent artist and jeweler.

Alisha has just completed her wax carving of the Lotus Dream Ear Cuff.  Her three dimensional Lotus Flower encircles the edge of the ear, it’s stem gracefully curling down along the ear lobe. The Lotus Dream Ear Cuff will be available in sterling silver and bronze in late June.

The lotus plant rises from the mud blossoming in a burst of color at the waters surface. It has sacred and spiritual significance in many asian and african cultures. In Buddhism It is a sacred flower representing spiritual awakening, enlightenment and purity. The lotus flower is a recurring image in ancient Egyptian art and the capitals of many temple pillars are crowned with carvings of the lotus.  I recently traveled to India where we saw this beautiful Bahai Temple inspired by the lotus flower.

Horsing Around – Good Luck Horseshoes

Alisha cleaning her horses hoof

Alisha cleaning her horses hoof

The horse is a symbol of power and passion with an appetite for freedom. Each culture and era has it’s unique interpretation of the horse spirit, all of them powerful and magical. It has been many years  since I have added any horse designs to my collection, but I have been “horsing around” this spring. Two of my new horse themed designs are pictured in green wax below.

Mandrake Root Charm

Why has it taken me so long to design a Mandrake Root Charm? I have seen all the Harry Potter movies and watched Pan’s Labyrinth and throughout history, the mandrake root has been steeped in magical lore. Pictured below is my version of a Mandrake Root charm carved in green wax beside my completed Mandrake Root cast in sterling silver . The charm is 1 1/2″ high and completely three dimensional.  I hope that my whimsical version of this enchanted plant will delight you.

My motivation for brining this design to fruition was an order of jewelry from a gallery in Paris named La Mandragore.  The English translation of “La Mandragore” is the Mandrake. I researched the folk lore behind the mandrake and created this design. La Mandragore now carries my Mandrake Jewelry in their Paris galleries. Their website is enchanting and they have three shops in various neighborhoods or “arrondissements” in Paris.  http://www.la-mandragore.com/index.html

This new charm design will be a much needed addition to my “Savage Garden Collection.” I have had fun designing this piece and having the artistic freedom to entwine the roots and to create my unique vision of this most magical plant.

Harry Potter Mandrake Root

According to Dream Scheme Studios, credited for sculpting the screaming mandrake root for the Harry Potter movies; “a Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has a root that looks like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows.) Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake’s screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours.”

Introducing Alisha’s Nautilus Pendant

Alisha and I seem to be obsessed with tentacles. Alisha just completed the wax for a whimsical and wonderful Nautilus Pendant.  On our recent buying trip to Tucson, she purchased  a number of tiny fossilized ammonite shells with the intent of designing a Nautilus Pendant that would incorporate the shells. She spent countless hours sculpting the undulating tentacles of her nautilus and plans to attatch the sterling silver nautilus to the ammonite by drilling and pegging into the fossilized stone shells. Because each ammonite shell varies slightly in size and shape, she will need to adapt each wax to it’s individual ammonite so each piece will be unique and have it’s own personality.
