Mandrake Root Charm

Why has it taken me so long to design a Mandrake Root Charm? I have seen all the Harry Potter movies and watched Pan’s Labyrinth and throughout history, the mandrake root has been steeped in magical lore. Pictured below is my version of a Mandrake Root charm carved in green wax beside my completed Mandrake Root cast in sterling silver . The charm is 1 1/2″ high and completely three dimensional.  I hope that my whimsical version of this enchanted plant will delight you.

My motivation for brining this design to fruition was an order of jewelry from a gallery in Paris named La Mandragore.  The English translation of “La Mandragore” is the Mandrake. I researched the folk lore behind the mandrake and created this design. La Mandragore now carries my Mandrake Jewelry in their Paris galleries. Their website is enchanting and they have three shops in various neighborhoods or “arrondissements” in Paris.  http://www.la-mandragore.com/index.html

This new charm design will be a much needed addition to my “Savage Garden Collection.” I have had fun designing this piece and having the artistic freedom to entwine the roots and to create my unique vision of this most magical plant.

According to Dream Scheme Studios, credited for sculpting the screaming mandrake root for the Harry Potter movies; “a Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, is a plant which has a root that looks like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows.) Whenever unearthed, the root screams. The scream of a mature Mandrake when it is unearthed will kill any person who hears it, but a young Mandrake’s screams will usually only knock a person out for several hours.”

Introducing Alisha’s Nautilus Pendant

Alisha and I seem to be obsessed with tentacles. Alisha just completed the wax for a whimsical and wonderful Nautilus Pendant.  On our recent buying trip to Tucson, she purchased  a number of tiny fossilized ammonite shells with the intent of designing a Nautilus Pendant that would incorporate the shells. She spent countless hours sculpting the undulating tentacles of her nautilus and plans to attatch the sterling silver nautilus to the ammonite by drilling and pegging into the fossilized stone shells. Because each ammonite shell varies slightly in size and shape, she will need to adapt each wax to it’s individual ammonite so each piece will be unique and have it’s own personality.

The Monterery Bay Aquarium recently opened it’s Tentacle Exhibit and I have already visited twice. It is a remarkable and inspiring venue of tentacles. Pictured below are the nautilus; bizarre and prehistoric and armored with their exquisite striped shells.

Balerion is my newest and most elaborate dragon ear wrap creation to date.  I have spent countless hours designing this sculptural dragon ear wrap.  It is pictured here in the original wax form and it will be transformed by fire when it is cast. Assuming that it’s transformation is successful, Balerion will be available in both sterling silver and bronze by the middle of June. It is configured for the right ear only.

Petits Bon-Hommes Porcelaine Orphans

In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. Madeline, by Ludwig Bemelman, 1939

I own a vintage copy of Madeline’s Rescue and remember my mother reading me all of the Madeline stories.  I loved the rhyming cadence and subsequently read the stories to my daughter Alisha who is now reading them to her daughter, Molly.

These charming, one of a kind porcelain pendants and earrings are hand crafted and painted by Marie-Christine Chartier of Loudon, France. I discovered her work (and the work of her husband, Patrice) over 30 years ago at a small left bank gallery in Paris. After some sleuthing, I connected with Marie and in 1998 I began selling their porcelain pendants in my Santa Cruz Gallery and at a few California Art and Wine Festivals.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it seems appropriate to find loving homes for these orphaned, porcelain children.

Marie and Patrice worked together to create these remarkable one of a kind figurines. I imagine their creation process as a duet; Patrice sculpting and Marie painitng the minute detail onto the miniature porcelain forms. Unfortunately, Patrice passed away in 2003 and Marie ceased making their porcelain jewelry. Continue reading

Godzilla Meets Marty Magic

Godzilla Attacks Tokyo

Godzilla Attacks Tokyo

Godzilla and I have a long history together. Thirty years ago, I went into labor while watching the VHS tape, Godzilla versus the Zero Monster. We lived far up in the Santa Cruz mountains and my mother was staying with us in anticipation of the arrival of her first grand child. Friends came over for dinner and the scheduled after dinner entertainment was a Godzilla movie marathon. To my mother’s dismay, I insisted on watching the end of Godzilla versus the Zero Monster even when my labor began. (Alisha, understanding her mother’s love of Godzilla, gave me plenty of time to finish the movie and time to drive to the hospital before making her joyful appearance.) Today, Alisha works cheerfully beside me in the office and studio and should be credited for taking the photographs of my Godzilla Charm.

Introducing the Celebrity Style Crescent Ear Wrap

celebrity style crescent ear wrap

Pair of Celebrity Style Crescent Ear Wraps by Marty Magic

Our new Celebrity Style Crescent Ear Wrap makes its debut! This is another collaborative design project between my husband Art and myself.

In late fall of 2013, R&B musician Janelle Monae’s stylist contacted us to create a custom ear wrap design for Janelle to wear on her 2013 fall tour. Though the tour was only a few weeks away and I was out of town on a family emergency, I managed to draw up a series of rough sketches on notebook paper and cocktail napkins.  Continue reading

Poseidon’s Gift – Octopus and Starfish Ear Cuff

Alisha’s newest design, Poseidon’s Gift Ear Cuff, is available at last and it was worth waiting for!  This is only her second season designing jewelry and this piece is exquisite.  A detailed and fluid octopus, entwining seaweed, star fish and sea shell are the combined elements of this sea scape fantasy ear cuff.  The ear cuff  is 2″ long and is configured for the left ear only. It is available in both bronze and sterling silver.

Before choosing a name for this ear cuff, we ran a Facebook post giveaway to help us name the piece. We received dozens of wonderful name suggestions and it was difficult to decide but we choose “Poseidon’s Gift,”  suggested by Shizuka Kohmoto.  The bronze version of this ear cuff will fly to Shizuka in Japan this coming Friday, April 4th.

Creating this piece has been fraught with challenges.  Not only was the wax design complex and challenging to execute, but when we shipped it to our casters, it arrived broken and needed to be returned to Alisha for repair.  It came back in six pieces and was subsequently anointed with Alisha’s tears. Carefully repaired, Poseidon’s Gift made the second trip to the casters safely, was successfully cast and is now available for your ear cuff pleasure.

The Maiden Voyage of the Nautilus Submarine

Art’s and my Squid Attacks the Nautilus Submarine Pendant is ready for it’s maiden voyage.  Lower the periscope,  batten down the hatches, fill the ballasts and submerge for 20,000 fathoms of adventure. The ticket price is quite reasonable.

SQUID ATTACKS NAUTILUS SUBMARINE PENDANT

SQUID ATTACKS NAUTILUS SUBMARINE PENDANT

This collaborative design, the Squid Attacks the Nautilus Submarine Pendant is inspired by Jules Verne’s classic tale, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. My husband, Art (aka artbobo) rendered the Nautilus using a 3-D  Rhino Cad program. His 3-D image was “printed” and he subsequently handed me a miniature blue submarine wax. Using my old school skills of wax sculpting, I created the miniature squid and wrapped tiny squid tentacles around the length of the submarine.

Vintage Raining Cats and Dogs Earrings

Raining Cats and Dogs Earrings

Raining Cats and Dogs Earrings

I am reissuing six “vintage” pairs of my Raining Cats and Dogs earrings. 23 years ago, in 1991, I conceived and executed these whimsical and impractical earrings. They were a big hit at the Art and Wine Festivals and I sold quite a few pairs. Because many cats and dogs were needed for each pair, and assembling them was labor intensive, “chaining” the many cats and dogs that rained down from the cloud took more time than I had. I assigned the assembly to my friend, Hazel, who at that time was my sales assistant at the summer festivals. Back then we were both preoccupied with raising our children and the unassembled parts for the Raining Cats and Dogs earrings, were tucked away, to await sunnier days.

The bag with the stray cats and dogs has been collecting dust in my studio for years. With the expectation and promise of April showers, my talented and cheerful daughter, Alisha has embraced the challenge of chaining the remaining cats and dogs to their thunder clouds. The recently available six pairs of earrings are delightful and delicate.  Each jump ring is tightly closed but cannot be soldered. The earrings should not be worn with long hair or with scarves casually thrown around ones neck. Pull your hair back and flaunt the whimsey of these unique, vintage earrings.

Assembling the Cats and Dogs

Assembling the Cats and Dogs

The photo above is taken at Alisha’s corner desk in what used to be her brother John’s room. John is now 21 and attending U.C.S.F. which is a good thing because we needed his room for Alisha’s office and workspace.  Many years ago, Art made the expansive corner desk out of plywood  and John decorated it with graffiti during his junior high and high school years.  The 1992 Marty Magic catalogue is pictured beside the scattered cats and dogs.

P.S. When I designed these earrings in 1991, Alisha was just seven years old.  She is now 29 years old with a seven year old daughter of her own; (and a three year old son:)  Is it just coincidence that the dogs barked and the cats meowed in the spring of 2014?

Update: 4/24/2014 – Sold Out!  The first five pairs have already found homes. We are keeping the last pair for our collection.
