Marty Magic featured in Lapidary Journal

I just found out that Lapidary Journal published an article about me in their September October issue. The Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist magazine is one of the oldest jewelry publications and I feel honored to be featured in it. The writer contacted me earlier this summer but I am surprised to see it has already been published.

I can’t seem to get the article preview web page to be visible. Here is a snippet from the article.

Flight of Fantasy
Our fascination with the fantasy world has been an innate
part of humankind. Fantasy fiction traces its roots back to
ancient mythology, in particular Homer’s Odyssey, written in
the 9th century BC. From Beowulf to Gulliver to the Brothers
Grimm, and more, fairytales and fantasy fiction throughout
history have influenced design, particularly in fashion and
accessories. Favorite icons include mermaids, fairies, angels,
unicorns, and dragons. Four enchanting designers share
their fancy for fantasy with Marty Bobroskie, aka Marty
Magic, leading the pack.
Raised on bedtime stories of Edgar Allen Poe, Tolkien,
Jules Verne, and Lewis Carroll, Bobroskie is inspired by an
artist mom and geologist dad, who was known to gift her
lizards, snakes, scorpions, and tarantulas from his field
trips in the high California deserts. Designing jewelry for
34 years, she is best known for her unique and sculptural
ear cuffs. Using the lost wax casting process, Bobroskie
personally sculpts in wax each original design at her Santa
Cruz, California-based studio, which she then casts into
gold, sterling silver, or bronze. Fantasy, fairy tales, and
the magic of nature significantly influence her work, with
dragons, wyverns, and giant octopus among her favorite
story creatures.
Bobroskie surmises a fantasy revival, teasing that reality
is not all that appealing. “If one’s day-to-day life is routine
and the media reports are gloomy, why not embrace a fanciful
world where you can imagine, create and enact a perfect
place.” She notes that her most successful sales events are
themed festivals, where “the distinction between CEO and
blue collar blur when pirates and wenches interact.” She
credits her extensive lifetime of travel with keeping her
designs fresh despite their ancient themes.
