Trilobites are an extinct marine arthropod and a distant relative to horseshoe crabs, spiders and lobsters. Over 20,000 trilobite species existed over 300 million years ago and are found on every continent on earth. The thousands of trilobite species are geographically dispersed over continents and throughout geological time. Many of the most exotic trilobite fossils come from Morocco and Russia but perfect specimens are rare and with all their spines in tact would be unsuitable and too large for jewelry.
Alisha’s trilobite jewelry designs feature Elrathia Kingi Trilobites from Utah. Sourcing the right size and quality is challenging and Alisha chooses the finest specimens available. Each specimen has its unique characteristics and time worn imperfections. (You would too if you were 65 – 300 million years old.)
Alisha, John and I have great fun exploring the fossil tents at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show. We ask many questions, find design inspiration and learn so much while playing our ‘Fossil Follies.’
If one needs a giant faux skeleton to ward off unwanted guests, Tucson is the place to buy one. Bigfoot?

My children and I have the bad habit of sticking our heads between too many teeth! I was seriously tempted by the gold plated dinosaur skull.
Alisha had an idea for a jewelry design using shark teeth so we were exploring our options. We found plenty in every flavor and size. Alisha couldn’t resist the temptation of trying a mouthful on for size.
Every where we looked there were preposterous amounts of teeth and spines!
We find all the trilobite species fascinating and beautiful but we were searching for the Elrathia Kingi Trilobites from Utah.
Trilobites are truly beautiful marine “bugs.” Trilobite means three lobed. Below is a simple diagram of the anatomy of a trilobite.
To close this Fossil Follies Trilobite Post is a very cute video of Alisha playing with plush toy ammonites and trilobites. It’s just eight seconds long.
