A New Marty Magic Studio in Texas

Who said that moving was easy?

Marty Magic is going through transition.  Alisha’s family has already moved to Magnolia, Texas and Alisha will soon join them. After returning from buying a house in Texas, Alisha quarantined and is temporarily living with Art and me. We have been working 7 days a week in my Santa Cruz shop; polishing  jewelry, doing inventory and ordering supplies for her new Texas studio.

For a year now, because of the pandemic, Alisha and I have worked from our separate Santa Cruz home studios. During this time we could not sit elbow to elbow and design together but we talked many times each day, visited frequently from 6 feet apart and shared the various Marty Magic responsibilities.

Thanks to our loyal customers, our online business has grown and become more than what is comfortable for me to to handle on my own. Alisha will soon take over the majority of order fulfillment from Texas and I will continue to work on special pieces in my Santa Cruz studio. I expect to have more design time in the future. I will miss Alisha and the family terribly but she and I will continue to work together but apart. I see my frequent flyer miles accumulating as I fly between California and Texas several times a year. Alisha promises to fly “home” to help me at a few of our California shows.

Naturally, Alisha is anxious to join her family in Texas and in mid March she will drive there and a new chapter in each of our lives will unfold. In the meantime, Sterling and the kids are in Texas, doing their part to ready the Marty Magic workshop and office for Alisha’s arrival.

The Texas contingency has already weathered many a storm! Literally! Snow and power outages were a challenge but when it snows, make snowmen!

There is a Buddhist concept that essentially says that we suffer because we want things to be different than they are and then we suffer because we want things to remain the same.

We are experiencing the bitter sweet times of transition.

Maryland Renaissance Faire Nostalgia – 2020

It’s Labor Day Weekend, 2020 as I write this. We should be frolicking at the Maryland Renaissance Festival but alas, the festivities are cancelled. We miss seeing all our friends and collectors and our fabulous team. Enjoy this gallery of photos from previous seasons!

Fossil Follies and Trilobites

Madagasgar Trilobites

Madagasgar Trilobites

Trilobites are an extinct marine arthropod and a distant relative to horseshoe crabs, spiders and lobsters. Over 20,000 trilobite species existed over 300 million years ago and are found on every continent on earth.  The thousands of trilobite species are geographically dispersed over continents and throughout geological time. Many of the most exotic trilobite fossils come from Morocco and Russia but perfect specimens are rare and with all their spines in tact would be unsuitable and too large for jewelry.

Alisha’s trilobite jewelry designs feature Elrathia Kingi Trilobites from Utah.  Sourcing the right size and quality is challenging and Alisha chooses the finest specimens available. Each specimen has its unique characteristics and time worn imperfections. (You would too if you were 65 – 300 million years old.)

Snake Inspiration at Marty Magic

Here at Marty Magic, we have great appreciation, fascination and respect for snakes. As the only child of a field geologist it was only natural that desert reptiles were my playmates. My father would often return from a day mapping the San Andreas fault with a snake, lizard or tarantula in his tin lunch pail. I would enjoy the temporary pet for a day or two and we would release it back into the desert.

Pictured below are some of our best snake encounters!

In 2007, John, Art and I traveled to Bali and Flores, Indonesia. For a price, a charming tattooed man allowed John to hold his boa constrictor. In 2017, ten years later, I took Alisha to Indonesia and we stopped at the Elephant Cave in Goa Gajah, Bali. The same tattooed man was in the square, bartering photos. The price had gone up in ten years but as the AmEx ads used to say, both moments were priceless.

In 2013, John and I spend three weeks in India, mostly the Rajasthan district. India is a magical country brimming with history, art, palaces, snake charmers and warm and generous people.

The Crowell – Eakins Farm in Avondale Pennsylvania

A few days ago, I received a call from Ken Mammarella, a freelance writer on assignment for Landenberg Life Magazine. He is writing an article about the preservation of Sunset Farms, property originally purchased in 1878  by my great grandfather, William James Crowell and my great grandmother, Francis Eakins Crowell. Google had led him to a photo I took in 2003 of the original farm house.

2003, Avondale, Crowell /Eakins Farm, Pennsylvania

My son John Bobroskie (age 11) and Chris Crowell Trostle (now deceased) stand on the front porch. In 2003, I took John out of school for a week to attend the Maryland Renaissance Festival and to visit relatives in the Avondale area. We visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see works by Thomas Eakins and I also took John to visit the farm house for better understanding of the history and his heritage. He enjoyed scrambling through the old farmhouse and I was relieved that he didn’t fall through the rotten floorboards of  second story. Chris was our guide and she led us across a field and down to the river to see the family graves. I took many photos on my Olympus camera of both farm house and graves but it wasn’t until some years later that I had the best of the prints scanned and digitized.

The Crowell-Eakins Family on their Avondale Farm – Photo taken by Thomas Eakins

One of my most cherished possessions is the original photograph above of the Crowell family sitting on the steps of their Avondale farmhouse, a photograph taken by Thomas Eakins. As best as Carol Shortlidge and I can determine, from top left to right they are: My great grandfather, William J. Crowell, (born in 1844) holding an open book and my grandfather, James White Crowell, (born in 1888) is the blond child sitting beside him. Ella is the young woman on the top step sitting beside her mother, my great grandmother, Frances Eakins Crowell. The baby on her lap is presumably Caroline who was the last of the 10 children born. Ben leans against the post.  The child below Ella is Fanny (or Frances.)  The three boys sitting on the bottom step are presumably Thomas, William  and Arthur. Margaret is the young woman sitting in front of the post at the far right. Assuming my grandfather is 2 years old in this photo, it was likely taken in 1889 or 1890.

Flash forward to a visit in 2012. I wanted to share the farmhouse and the graves with my husband Art. Chris and her daughter Carole were again our guides. The farmhouse was gone and in its place was small renovated memorial marker. Carole asked permission from whom I presume were John Morris and Lynn Sinclair, that we be allowed to visit the graves and we walked down to the river. I now had an Apple I-Phone and I took many took many photos of the graves. In an effort to record family history, before time changes the landscape and the markers themselves are buried, I am posting images of each grave marker.

Captive Design Time

Alisha and I are each designing in our separate home studios. It’s hard to tell if we have more or less creative time during the sheltering at home orders. Alisha wears the extra responsibility of home schooling both her kids and I am solely responsible for polishing and fulfilling online orders.

Our thanks to all of you who are shopping online, keeping us busy and lending support during these challenging times.

Pictured below in wax are  some of the designs that we have completed. Although we sculpt all of our originals and do the final finishing in our Santa Cruz studio, we are dependent on our California based foundry for the casting. The foundry is still closed but opening soon with a skeleton crew of their three family members. We expect that all of the following designs will be available by mid to late summer.

I am weaving my own magic carpet of escape as I write this.

Sheltering in our Home Studios

Marty Magic is fortunate to have an in home studio and in spite of the challenging times, both Alisha and I are happy and healthy and staying productive.

It’s been nearly three weeks since Alisha has come to work  at the ‘mother ship’ but she has set up her own design space in her home just 5 minutes away.  In between home schooling her children, she is answering e-mail and designing new pieces. (The peanut butter sandwich crumbs have been removed for your visual enjoyment.)

Multitasking between jewelry design and home school

Alisha, multitasking between jewelry design and home school

For years, Alisha’s and my wax carving station has been at an antique drop down desk in my living room. I feel inspiration designing in home surroundings filled with family heirlooms and mementos from our travels. Alisha and I usually sit elbow to elbow collaborating (and listening to audio books on tape.)

After 41 years in business there are not many aspects of the business that I can’t manage alone.  We were already well prepared for the summer festivals so we have plenty of inventory and since I am on my own now,  I hand polish each order as it comes in as well as ship from our in house shipping station.

Marty in the polishing room

Dave, a talented jeweler in his own right, does our ring sizing and stone settings and he lives just 10 minutes away. He too is sheltering at home where he has his own workshop. A mail slot drop is all that is needed to keep orders flowing.

And if technology gets the better of me, my husband Art is here to offer technical support. Although on a normal Marty Magic workday,  Art usually escapes to a local cafe, he is adapting to the hardships of home pressed coffee and corner window overlooking the Koi Pond.

Although we miss the hustle and bustle of everyone working together in the studio, we are adapting and are getting into the rhythm our new routines. We hope that all of you are well and finding new ways to exercise your body, mind and spirit. Positive vibes to us all.

2020 – Always Amazed at the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Shows!

I look forward to the Tucson show each year.  The various venues  take over much of Tucson and this year, Alisha, John and I go together. Three sets of trained eyes are an asset when ticking off  the gemstones and fossils on our shopping lists.  We start each day early and don’t quit until the shows close.

We hope this picture blog is both informative and amusing.

John, Alisha and Marty- Mercado Tucson

John, Alisha and Marty at the Mercado Tucson, one of the shuttle stops between shows.

We go to Tucson to buy, learn and find inspiration for new designs. Many hotel rooms are turned into temporary show rooms. We consider buying an Opalized Belemnite Squid Fossil to set in a piece of jewelry. The ones below right are from Coober Pedy, Australia. The vendor has a few freed from the rock but I stick to my shopping list and pass on this expensive whim.

Alisha plans to design a shark tooth pendant so we are on the hunt for fossilized shark’s teeth. Planus Shark Teeth seem to be the right size for her design and she buys many. We learn that the hooked-tooth mako shark lived during the Miocene era and are found in marine deposits along the Pacific Rim, predominately on the west coast of the United States. These prehistoric sharks were about the size of our modern day great white shark. Later in our hotel room, Alisha models the teeth for us. Shopping with my daughter is so much fun!

We spend another prehistoric day at the 22nd Street Show, an immense tented venue.

On the evening of the Super Bowl, we return to our hotel to find a Super Bead-a-Thon in progress in our hotel atrium. Many professional beaders have entered this event that Rio Grande and Tierra Cast, among others, have sponsored. All the participants are given an identical bag of findings and beads and have one hour to create a unique jewelry design.  We arrive half way through the timed event and even John finds it interesting and suspenseful. There is an open bar and we order drinks and with mounting excitement, we watch the designs unfold.

What is an Ammonite?

Each February Alisha and I fly to Tucson to attend the Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show.  The show covers much of Tucson and two sets of eyes are an asset. We have our synced shopping lists and we start each day early and don’t quit until the shows close. We are a great team and make the shopping fun!

In 2015, after scouring the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show,  Alisha returned to her Santa Cruz, California studio with a variety of Ammonite Fossils. She was inspired to design Ammonite Nautilus Jewelry. Since then her Ammonite Pendant has been well received and each year we return to Tucson in  search of Ammonites suitable for her Nautilus Jewelry designs.

Exciting Ammonite Find

Alisha with her exciting Ammonite Find

Although it is easy to imagine that today’s Nautilus descended from the Ammonite, the extinct marine Ammonite was more closely related to the octopus, squid and cuttlefish than the nautilus. Ammonites belonged of the class Cephalopoda and first appeared during the Devonian age. They lived in schools, were prolific breeders  and evolved in all parts of our oceans and over a vast expanse of geological time. They are one of the most abundant fossil found today and  are of value and interest in the scientific dating of other fossils.

Ammonite Fossils - Tucson 2020

Ammonite Fossils – Tucson 2020

Their spiral shape shells are beautiful and the species evolved over millenniums. Depending on ocean sediments and aquatic chemistry the fossilization process creates varied results. There are Ammonites with intricate jade patters; opalized, spiky, rainbow, red flash and pyritized Ammonites. There are literally thousands of Ammonite fossils to pick from but choosing  pristine specimens that are suitable in size is both a challenging and exciting treasure hunt.

Perhaps the most stunning Ammonite Fossils are the large Ammonites from Canada. The Canadian find has been trademarked as “Ammolite” and pieces of the opalized rainbow shell are often cut and polished into smaller cabochons that are suitable for jewelry. Canadian Ammolites are opalized Ammonites. They are stunning but we have yet to find a small complete fossil suitable for Alisha’s Nautilus pendant.

Last year Alisha found several Pyritized Ammonites suitable for her Nautilus Pendant and was on the search for them again this year. The fossilized Ammonite shell has been replaced with pyrite, an iron sulfide and good specimens are rare.

The Pink Rainbow Ammonite (below left) was a great find this year. The shell is heavily ridged and has a small pyrite cluster in the center. Realize that the majority of these fossils are 240 million years old and are seldom pristine but each specimen is uniquely beautiful.

Below are some examples of the jade pattern ammonite fossils. The intricate pattern of the shell is especially beautiful and Alisha has chosen to set one of these in 14K gold accented with a bezel set chrome tourmaline.

Last year, Alisha purchased her first Timor Ammonite.. She found several more at this years Tucson Fossil show.  We have found just a couple of  vendors who offer these unusual specimens and they are usually quite large and unsuitable for jewelry. Timor is an remote island at the eastern most tip of the Indonesian archipelago.
