2020 – Always Amazed at the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Shows!

I look forward to the Tucson show each year.  The various venues  take over much of Tucson and this year, Alisha, John and I go together. Three sets of trained eyes are an asset when ticking off  the gemstones and fossils on our shopping lists.  We start each day early and don’t quit until the shows close.

We hope this picture blog is both informative and amusing.

John, Alisha and Marty- Mercado Tucson

John, Alisha and Marty at the Mercado Tucson, one of the shuttle stops between shows.

We go to Tucson to buy, learn and find inspiration for new designs. Many hotel rooms are turned into temporary show rooms. We consider buying an Opalized Belemnite Squid Fossil to set in a piece of jewelry. The ones below right are from Coober Pedy, Australia. The vendor has a few freed from the rock but I stick to my shopping list and pass on this expensive whim.

In one of the hotel suites,  the vendor has set up a dark room area to showcase the florescent minerals. Under ultraviolet light, they glow with an amazing array of vibrant colors. The below right photo is of the rocks under normal lighting.

Alisha plans to design a shark tooth pendant so we are on the hunt for fossilized shark’s teeth. Planus Shark Teeth seem to be the right size for her design and she buys many. We learn that the hooked-tooth mako shark lived during the Miocene era and are found in marine deposits along the Pacific Rim, predominately on the west coast of the United States. These prehistoric sharks were about the size of our modern day great white shark. Later in our hotel room, Alisha models the teeth for us. Shopping with my daughter is so much fun!

We spend another prehistoric day at the 22nd Street Show, an immense tented venue.

On Tuesday, Feb 4th, the AGTA show opens to verified buyers. Much documentation is needed to be allowed entry and the security is high. Our badges are scanned when we enter and we peruse the high end gemstones and designer jewelry booths.

On the evening of the Super Bowl, we return to our hotel to find a Super Bead-a-Thon in progress in our hotel atrium. Many professional beaders have entered this event that Rio Grande and Tierra Cast, among others, have sponsored. All the participants are given an identical bag of findings and beads and have one hour to create a unique jewelry design.  We arrive half way through the timed event and even John finds it interesting and suspenseful. There is an open bar and we order drinks and with mounting excitement, we watch the designs unfold.

What is an Ammonite?

Each February Alisha and I fly to Tucson to attend the Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show.  The show covers much of Tucson and two sets of eyes are an asset. We have our synced shopping lists and we start each day early and don’t quit until the shows close. We are a great team and make the shopping fun!

In 2015, after scouring the Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show,  Alisha returned to her Santa Cruz, California studio with a variety of Ammonite Fossils. She was inspired to design Ammonite Nautilus Jewelry. Since then her Ammonite Pendant has been well received and each year we return to Tucson in  search of Ammonites suitable for her Nautilus Jewelry designs.

Exciting Ammonite Find

Alisha with her exciting Ammonite Find

Although it is easy to imagine that today’s Nautilus descended from the Ammonite, the extinct marine Ammonite was more closely related to the octopus, squid and cuttlefish than the nautilus. Ammonites belonged of the class Cephalopoda and first appeared during the Devonian age. They lived in schools, were prolific breeders  and evolved in all parts of our oceans and over a vast expanse of geological time. They are one of the most abundant fossil found today and  are of value and interest in the scientific dating of other fossils.

Ammonite Fossils - Tucson 2020

Ammonite Fossils – Tucson 2020

Their spiral shape shells are beautiful and the species evolved over millenniums. Depending on ocean sediments and aquatic chemistry the fossilization process creates varied results. There are Ammonites with intricate jade patters; opalized, spiky, rainbow, red flash and pyritized Ammonites. There are literally thousands of Ammonite fossils to pick from but choosing  pristine specimens that are suitable in size is both a challenging and exciting treasure hunt.

Perhaps the most stunning Ammonite Fossils are the large Ammonites from Canada. The Canadian find has been trademarked as “Ammolite” and pieces of the opalized rainbow shell are often cut and polished into smaller cabochons that are suitable for jewelry. Canadian Ammolites are opalized Ammonites. They are stunning but we have yet to find a small complete fossil suitable for Alisha’s Nautilus pendant.

Last year Alisha found several Pyritized Ammonites suitable for her Nautilus Pendant and was on the search for them again this year. The fossilized Ammonite shell has been replaced with pyrite, an iron sulfide and good specimens are rare.

The Pink Rainbow Ammonite (below left) was a great find this year. The shell is heavily ridged and has a small pyrite cluster in the center. Realize that the majority of these fossils are 240 million years old and are seldom pristine but each specimen is uniquely beautiful.

Below are some examples of the jade pattern ammonite fossils. The intricate pattern of the shell is especially beautiful and Alisha has chosen to set one of these in 14K gold accented with a bezel set chrome tourmaline.

Last year, Alisha purchased her first Timor Ammonite.. She found several more at this years Tucson Fossil show.  We have found just a couple of  vendors who offer these unusual specimens and they are usually quite large and unsuitable for jewelry. Timor is an remote island at the eastern most tip of the Indonesian archipelago.

Zacatitos Baja Paintings by Art Bobroskie

Zacatitos Baja, where the desert meets the Sea of Cortez is the inspiration for Art Bobroskie’s paintings. In 2018, Art resumed painting in his off grid Zacatitos Baja studio. With time and inspiration from every vista and without the distractions or interruptions of his busy Santa Cruz life, these desert and seascape paintings continue to unfold.

Marty Magic – Obsessed and Inspired by Giant Lizards

Art recently returned from Tokyo with two Godzillas to add to our collection. Giant lizards of any kind have been and will continue to be an inspiration and obsession at Marty Magic.

After a remarkable trip to the Komodo Islands in 2008 with Art and John, I wanted to share the Komodo Island Dragon experience with Alisha. Our 2017 adventure was an amazing mother and daughter trip. It wasn’t planned that Alisha would wear her Marty Magic t-shirt on our hike of Komodo Island but I love this shot of Alisha taking a photo of the dragon. To get to Komodo and Rinca Islands, Alisha and I spent an overnight alone traveling  on a small wooden boat with a crew of three Indonesian men.  The accommodations were minimal and we slept uncomfortably and fully dressed on deck. There was a single shared toilet for the 5 of us, no running water and the food was awful. Nevertheless,  I would not hesitate to take this trip again. Perhaps next time, it will be with my grand-daughter, Molly.

Traveling to the Komodo and Rinca Islands and seeing a Komodo Dragon for the first time is an experience I will never forget. In 2008, Art John and I hiked through the tropical dry forest accompanied by our guide with a forked stick. The Komodo Dragon is the largest lizard in the world. It is a monitor lizard with a forked tongue, serrated teeth and bacteria heavy saliva. They are dangerous and can take down an unsuspecting water buffalo, deer, pig or misdirected human. If not killed immediately, the prey will eventually die of infection from the bite. They inhabit just 5 islands in Indonesia. Rinca Island and Komodo Island are national parks where the dragons are protected and respected. With reasonable caution, one can safely hike these islands with a guide and have face to face encounters with these remarkable lizards.  As American Express would say: Priceless!

I am blissfully happy holding a beautiful Green Iguana at a bird and reptile park in Ubud Bali. We entered a park size enclosure where these iguanas were free to roam. There were trees for them to climb and out of the way places for them to hide if they were not feeling social.  My iguana just wanted to snuggle and the big guy John is holding was curious and had a big personality. These were Iguana encounters of the best kind!

The Magic Family has traveled the world in search of lizards. John and I took a 3 day live aboard dive trip from Cairns Australia to Lizard Island. Lizard Island is teaming with yellow spotted monitor lizards. Unlike marine iguanas, monitor lizards are fast and  skittish. One can travel to Lizard Island by boat but aside from one luxury resort with rooms over $1000 a night and 10 by reservation only camping spaces, there are no accommodations on the island.

My love of reptiles began when I was younger than John. As the only child of a field geologist, my father would bring me home lizards, snakes and tortoises as overnight pets. He would return them to the field on his next field trip out. When our son John was ten, he adopted his first bearded dragon. Show off was the best pet a boy or mom could ever have. He lived nearly 14 years and gave our family great joy.

Who is Marty Magic?

Alisha and Marty Mountain View Art and Wine Festival

Alisha and Marty Mountain View Art and Wine Festival – 2019

Marty Magic is run by Marty and Alisha, a mother-daughter team. Their jewelry is created by the lost wax process. They create their unique design in their Santa Cruz, California studio and their jewelry is made in America. Fantasy and the magic of nature are their muses.

Marty has been designing and making jewelry for over 40 years and Alisha has inherited both her mother’s talent and her entrepreneurial spirit. They have a small team of talented people who work with them in helping to bring their designs and creative visions to fulfillment.

Marty’s Story —“I started my business over 40 years ago in the summer of 1978, selling my jewelry at Bay Area Art and Wine Festivals.

“I grew up in Southern California; the only child of a scientist father and an artist mother. My father was chairman of the geology department at UCLA, and subsequently at UCSB. I traveled extensively with my parents when my father was doing research, mapping or lecturing abroad. I’ve lived in a chalet in Austria; in an adobe cottage at the edge of the Salton Sea, California; on a farm outside of Edinburgh; in a thatched cottage in Gilleleje, Denmark; and in Bogotá, Columbia. I continue to travel extensively and to find inspiration in the cultures and biodiversity of our planet.

I began making jewelry in high school, assembling beaded earrings and making copper enamel jewelry. My entrepreneurial spirt took shape early on and I took these pieces to school, pinned inside my notebook and sold them to my classmates. I graduated with a B.A. in Art from University of Redlands with a focus in ceramics and under the critical eye of Leon Moburg I took an introductory jewelry class. My early projects surprised us both and I  was soon doing independent study and was asked to teach the beginning jewelry class the following year.

After graduation, I worked a number of waitressing jobs but continued making lost wax jewelry and cast my pieces in my garage studio. It wasn’t until the summer of 1978 when I drove with my husband Scott to show at a San Francisco street festival that my jewelry career  unfolded. (Scott is now my ex but a close friend and Alisha’s father.)

Early on, I only sold my jewelry at art festivals and fairs in the Silicon Valley. As the tech industry grew, so did business (my thanks to all my geeky patrons and my techie husband, Art.)  In 1995, Art helped me enter the digital age by launching my first website, which has become a significant venue for sales.

In 2010 my daughter, Alisha began working full time with me in the studio.  Alisha, who was raised doing art shows, takes all the product shots and manages the office and is a wiz with our online venues. She has a natural aptitude for design and lends fresh creativity to our Marty Magic business. In every product description, we note if the design is one of Alisha’s or mine.

In addition to having our Marty Magic online shop we also have an Etsy shop and an Amazon Handmade shop. We continue to show at a handful of Bay Area Art and Wine Festivals as well as the Maryland Renaissance Festivals where I have had a shop for over 35 years. Thanks to our loyal followers, our unique designs and Alisha’s fresh visions, we look forward to many more years of creativity.” — Marty of Marty Magic

Alisha’s Story —

Alisha Modeling her colossal trilobite pendant

Alisha Modeling her colossal trilobite pendant – 2019

“Growing up, I watched my mother design jewelry and run her business. I was helping sell jewelry as soon as I was tall enough to see over the display cases. I was influenced by my parents’ hippy, artistic and geeky friends. Santa Cruz is just over the hill from the Silicon Valley where my Papa worked so there was an interesting mix of guests at the dinner table many nights.

I briefly studied fashion design at S.F.S.U. and then completed an AA in Early Childhood Development at Cabrillo Community College. I have a supportive husband and am the proud and happy mother of two children. I began working with my mother full time in 2010.  I love designing jewelry and seem to have inherited both my mother’s talent and her entrepreneurial spirit. Marty Magic now has two creative women working as a team to grow the business.” — Alisha of Marty Magic

Star Trek – The Next Generation – Angel One

My Star Trek connection was not a happy one because I was never compensated for the several pairs of ear wraps that the were used in the filming of the Next Generation, Angel One episodes. This is the story: For many years I had a booth at the L.A. Harvest Festival. in the early 1980’s, the costume director for Star Trek at Paramount Studios dropped his card off at my booth and asked me to call him. My unique ear cuffs had attracted him to my booth. My business was just a few years young and I was literally a starving artist.

A few weeks later, I nervously made the call and made an appointment at Paramount Studios to meet this man. He requested that I bring all of my ear wraps and I drove several hours with the aide of a paper map and awkwardly presented my ear wraps to the arrogant director. He choose 4 or 5 pairs and asked me the prices? He feigned shock at my modest request and told me that my prices were more than his budget allowed. I was young and easily intimidated so I offered him a discount. He suggested that instead of paying me, that they send me photos of the cast wearing my ear wraps and that this would be worth much more to me in the long run than money. Pressured, I agreed to this, left him the chosen ear wraps and we shook hands. As instructed, I gave his secretary all of my contact information so that Paramount could mail me the promised photos. Weeks passed and the photos did not arrive. I telephoned the studio and laboriously wrote typed letters requesting either payment or the promised photos. I eventually gave up and was never compensated for the ear wraps that were worn by the main character Commander William T. Riker or Trent the personal secretary of Beata on: The Next Generation, Angel One, of Star Trek. All the men on this planet were subservient to women and had limited rights.

Some of you may know that we sell our jewelry on Amazon Handmade. Selling on Amazon has its pluses and minuses. We are laughing today because this morning we received an Amazon notification targeting our Flytrap Jewelry designs. Apparently in order to sell any “insect trapping device” we must complete an online training and have our pesticide products approved by the EPA. Although we know it is simply a robotic search word mistake we must resolve this or Amazon will deactivate all of our Flytrap Jewelry and most likely issue us bad metrics for non-compliance.  We have opened a case with Amazon to request that they exempt us from the EPA requirements. Never a dull moment!

Although we maintain a 5 star review on Amazon Handmade, because of their timed shipping targets, we are often stressed in getting a customized design completed and shipped within their expectations. The very few times that we have been a day late on a shipment, we get “spanked” by Amazon and they take away our ability to offer priority or express shipping options for 30 days. We are also not allowed to communicate with a customer directly and cannot enter any URL’s. I understand that they don’t want customers purchasing from a web site other than Amazon but I frequently get questions from customers that would be easiest answered with a link to my website. Nowadays, three sets of paws come to work with three humans to begin the Marty Magic day. Alisha arrives with Luna, Jackie with Bonzi and Avira with Ellie-Bean. As we humans pour our first cups of coffee, the dogs frolic excitedly and sniff each other’s butts.

Because I have visiting canines almost daily, I do not need to own a dog. I prefer scales to hair or fur and the Marty Magic studio mascot has always been a bearded dragon. This past December, the third of my venerable dragons soared into lizard heaven. In spite of the scuffling of dogs, the studio has felt strangely quiet and I recently adopted a male bearded dragon.

At ‘his’ first wellness check I was surprised at his sex change. I am informed that that the golden dragon that I had mindfully named Huitzilopochtli, after the Aztec Sun God is actually female. Because all of us had difficulty pronouncing Huitzilopochtli, we had already given ‘him’ the nick name of Hoochie Poochie. The name sticks and she is a sweet girl who is not inclined to eat her vegetables but wants only to gobble down cockroaches and mealy worms. Yummy!

Luna was a dumpster puppy adopted 3 years ago by my daughter Alisha. She is a Pitsky and I call her Lunatic because she sings instead of barks and is full of boundless energy. She is going to dog training to learn impulse control. Because of her big ears she is named after the Stellaluna Bat from the Janell Cannon picture book.

The Wax Creation Process of Dragon’s Tear Opal Pendant

A special customer commissioned me to design a dragon pendant around a stunning Australian Koroite Boulder Opal. Blue and green bands of opalescence arch across this remarkable 42 carat stone. I usually create one of a kind designs on speculation so there is a bit more pressure when I am designing a piece for a commission but this project has been fun.

This photo blog shows the slow progression and changes to the design during the creation process. Because the following progress photos are taken quickly on my design table, they are not glamorous. Going upstairs to the light box would completely derail my flow.

I started work on this piece in late August. My show schedule allows me little creative time but at the end of September, I work intensively over three days. The dragon is still not finished and next week I will curve and define the jaw line and add the final foot and claw to the back side. The claws will ultimately be refined and I will figure out a good balance point, hidden between the dragon’s wings through which the chain will slide. It’s past time to decide on the accent stone for this one of a kind dragon. I hope to post the completed piece, cast in 18K gold in our December newsletter. Stay Tuned!

In mid September, 2018, Art and I visited New York. We stayed with friends in Hoboken and for two of our three days, commuted into New York to spend time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Several months back, Art began working on a copy of John Singer Sargent’s painting of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw. After watching her image unfold in stages on Art’s canvass I feel that I know Lady Agnew intimately. Enjoy watching Art’s 45 second process video and watch Lady Agnew appear.

The Met has a large collection of Sargent’s and although Lady Agnew was not among their collection, seeing Madame X, also by Sargent was on Art’s bucket list.

Visiting museums is perhaps my favorite activity and inspiration. I feel excited as I enter each new gallery and encounter world class paintings that have become my friends and sometimes even portray my family. Adjoining the Sargent gallery is a room with several Thomas Eakins paintings. I am immediately drawn to the painting of his father, Benjamin Eakins writing calligraphy. Thomas Eakins is my great great uncle. His sister is my great grandmother and Benjamin Eakins is my great great grandfather. Handed down to me from the Crowell family (my maiden name) of Avondale Pennsylvania are several original works of calligraphy by Benjamin Eakins.

When I returned to California, I looked through my archives and here are a few photos of a  of the original calligraphies.

On day four we drove south into Pennsylvania to visit the Brandywine River Art Museum. In 2001 this museum featured a retrospective Thomas Eakins exhibit but the museums focus and permanent collection are the paintings by N.C. Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth. We enjoyed a tour to N.C. Wyeth’s studio as well as time visiting the museum collection.
