A Race to the Gargoyles

Marty with the Gargoyles

Marty with the Gargoyles of Notre Dame

The alarm goes off at 7:30 A.M. We shower and pack quickly to check out of our hotel.  After paying the bill, we walk briskly in the direction of the river and towards Notre Dame. It’s a beautiful sunlit morning with white clouds dotting the sky and although Art and John wish for a leisurely breakfast at our usual café, I am set on getting to Notre Dame before there are any lines. When we arrive at 9:00 A.M. we walk straight into the majestical cathedral and as in the past, all my senses are stirred. I inhale the scent of frankincense and candle wax and my eyes follow the soaring lines of the gothic arches, splashed with rainbows of color from the stain glass windows. Immense lighted chandeliers illuminate the interior and we circumambulate the cathedral more quickly than I would like. Continue reading

Dive with a Manta Ray

Gliding into Marty’s ocean collection is her new one of a kind, 18k gold Manta Ray Pendant.  A stunning  8 carat Australian Crystal Opal is the inspiration for this elegant design. The translucent opal shimmers with iridescent blue and green and three brilliant diamonds are tube set in the curve of the tail, invoking of bubbles rising to the surface.

The Ascent of the Throne Dragon Ear Wrap

Bronze Throne Dragon Ear Wrap

Bronze Throne Dragon Ear Wrap

I am proud to introduce my new Throne Dragon Ear Wrap, inspired by my customers who are fans of the Game of Thrones.  It’s been several years since I’ve added a dragon ear piece to my line, partially because conceiving and designing a uniquely fresh dragon ear wrap is very challenging but also because I have been discouraged by all the counterfeit copies of my designs appearing for sale on the internet.

Thank you for supporting original art and declining to buy counterfeit designs in any format.

The internet is both a blessing and a curse to artists who create original work because once a new design is “published” the piece is vulnerable to plagiarism.

A Leopard Wearing Different Spots.

Drum rolls again for my talented daughter, Alisha.  We proudly introduce her newly hatched Leopard Gecko Charm.  This is only her fifth design (as a professional jeweler)  but each of her 5 creations shows a marked development.  I will have to step up my game if I am to retain title as the master designer of Marty Magic Jewelry.

Although Alisha and I work together almost daily, most of our time is spent handling the business of being in business.  Our most cherished times are those spent together, elbow to elbow at our work station creating designs that come from our hearts.

Aside from a cat and a dog,  Alisha’s first pets were two Leopard Geckos.  She loved and  nurtured “Hortense and Mergatroid” and like her mother celebrates the scaly inhabitants of our planet.

John and the Gold Owl Ring

I’m often asked about graduation gift suggestions.

We gave our son, John this gold owl ring when he graduated from Santa Cruz High.  Two years later he still proudly wears this ring on his pointer finger.  The Owl is a symbol of wisdom and this ring is available in both gold ($2395) and sterling silver ($145)

A customer recently e-mailed me to tell me that she received a sterling silver  Magic Lamp charm for her 8th grade graduation and still wears it 15 years later.  She is saving her 3 wishes for a rainy day.

This circle of Fishy Friends is presented here on a charm bracelet but each of the characters can be purchased separately and added to your at home aquarium.  Complicated filtration systems are not needed and your charm will shine on for generations with no more care than an occasional rub of Mrs. Wrights  silver cream.  (Please note that liquid silver dips are toxic to these fish and all of Marty’s sterling silver pieces.)

My mother passed away 6 years ago at 86 years of age. She was a nurturing mother, a devoted wife, an artist, writer, photographer and traveler. She was smart, independent and always busy to a fault. It’s only very recently that I am coming to understand how much I am like her and the huge influence that she has had on my life.

My mother was healthy and active until a few months before her death. She choose not to fight the cancer and had time to prepare for her passing.  We found deep in her closet a bundled manuscript and her original pen and ink drawings for an unpublished book, Cataclysmania.  Under her direction, my patient and technical husband Art scanned her drawings and formatted her writing into a 100 page softbound book.  Unfortunately, the book was not printed before her death but we gave copies away to her friends and family at her memorial.

Above are just two images of many from my mother’s book, Cataclysmania.

This week, to honor my mother; Alisha, (my daughter and Betty’s granddaughter,) worked to archived her original pen and ink drawings into an acid free scrap book format.

The Circle of Life Tree Pendant

In 1979, one of my first jewelry designs was a Tree of Life Pendant.  The piece was 1 3/4″ high, a design of entwining roots, branches and leaves and well conceived for the early 80’s and the beginning of my career. For years since I have wanted to design a second and more inspired version but my creative time is very limited and a unique concept did not materialize until now.

The images below are of my new wax carving taken from both the front and the back, the female and the male sides.

Old School Tools

A couple of weeks ago I attended a party and made a few new friends in the Santa Cruz community. I found myself nibbling on a smoked salmon appetizer, awkwardly trying to dislodge the salmon from between my teeth and talking to a dentist. Lost wax casting is a shared art between dentists and jewelers and we soon found common ground in our conversation. After my 2nd or perhaps 3rd glass of wine, I brazenly asked him if he might have used dental tools that he no longer needed?

He called last week to tell me that he had put together a package of worn (and sterilized) dental tools to give to me. Tonight, I picked up a treasure of old school dental tools that will carry me through the final 20 years of my jewelry career.

Tonight I toast to regular dental check up’s, to my new friends, old school tools and another 20 years of creative wax carving.
